 ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marina Stander, born in Zimbabwe (then Southern Rhodesia) in 1954, grew up mostly in Vereeniging in the Vaal Triangle in Gauteng, South Africa. She studied at the University of Pretoria and currently lives in a rural town, Piet Retief, in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

She is inspired by things that 'speak' to her, something that depicts emotion in some or other way: music, children, hands (she is a music teacher), friends, animals (especially cats) nature and beautiful photographs. She can't get enough of all the beautiful things God has created.

She has always liked creating something, but in the past this was restricted to various small crafts, music and sewing. The urge to paint has lain dormant inside her for many years as she did not want to spend too much time and money on something that she could not share with her totally blind husband. He encouraged
her to persue this passion, though. There are quite a few artists among her relatives, but she only started art as a hobby after retiring early as a teacher. She took lessons from a local well qualified artist and friend, Mrs Trienkie Bennie, from 2007 to 2010 and has done various online courses with watercolour artist Suset Maakal.

Marina has tried out many mediums, but enjoys watercolours most, although she works in pastels, charcoal, oils and ink as well. She simply loves what she does. Every time she sells a painting, she feels happy but also sad at losing something dear to her. Her paintings can also be seen at http://www.southafricanartists.com and on Facebook at Marina se kunshoekie.
